Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir — Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir, a combination of oral protease inhibitors, is one of our preferred options for COVID-19-specific therapy for symptomatic outpatients with risk factors for severe disease. (See 'Our approach'above.) 

The dose is 300 mg nirmatrelvir (two 150 mg tablets) with one 100 mg ritonavir tablet taken together orally twice daily for 5 days. It should be initiated as soon as possible following COVID-19 diagnosis and within five days of symptom onset. 

For patients with moderately reduced kidney function (eGFR 30 to 59 mL/min), the dose is one 150 mg nirmatrelvir tablet and one 100 mg ritonavirtablet taken together twice daily for five days. Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir is not recommended for patients with eGFR <30>
